Criticism vs. Feedback: An Overview

Before dissecting the impact on individuals, let’s establish the basic differences between criticism and feedback.

Criticism typically carries a negative connotation. It is often perceived as an act of pointing out mistakes or flaws without offering any constructive solutions. The intention may or may not be to aid improvement, and it usually results in discouraging the recipient or fostering resentment.

On the contrary, feedback is a more balanced and objective evaluation of performance, focused on both strengths and areas for improvement. The purpose of feedback is to stimulate learning and development, providing the recipient with a roadmap for enhancing their abilities and performance.
