Moving from Tech Leader to CTO: My Journey and Lessons Learned
It was a fascinating yet demanding transition when I made the leap from being a technical leader to taking on the role of the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for my company. The shift called for new skill sets, responsibilities, and a significant mindset change.
Here, I share some of the essential elements I had to focus on during this transition.
1. Business Acumen
As a technical leader, I was primarily focused on the technology itself — the code, architecture, design, and implementation. But as a CTO, it became crucial to understand the business side of things: the market landscape, competition, business strategy, and financials. This understanding was necessary to align technology strategy with business goals, and ensure that our technology initiatives were driving business value. I attended business strategy workshops, read books, followed thought leaders, and worked closely with our CEO to build this business acumen.
2. Strategic Thinking
