What is a data Mesh? Data Mesh and Data Lake.
A Data Mesh is a novel, decentralized approach to data architecture that treats data as a product and distributes data ownership across an organization.
Unlike centralized data systems like a data lake, a data mesh allows each team to manage and be responsible for their own data, promoting better data quality, scalability, and governance. However, transitioning to a data mesh requires a significant shift in organizational culture and the approach to data management. Implementing a data mesh involves recognizing domains, assigning data product owners, federating governance, and building inter-team collaboration.
A data lake is a centralized repository for storing all types of raw data at scale. However, building a data mesh on top of a data lake can be flawed due to the inherent differences in centralization, data ownership, scalability, governance, and data quality between the two models.
While it’s technically possible, it could involve compromises that dilute the benefits of a data mesh.
Data is the new oil. It has been playing a pivotal role in the decision-making process and driving the growth of organizations. In our quest to tame this data, we have invented many strategies and architectures, one of which is a Data Mesh.
